TEHRAN-The Iranian short animation “In the Shadow of the Cypress,” directed by Shirin Sohani and Hossein Molayemi won an award at the 23rd Tribeca Film Festival, held in New York, the U.S., from June 5 to 16.

Produced by the Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults, the flick won the Best Animated Short at the American event, ISNA reported.

“For using a distinctive visual style, unique imagery, and exceptional sound design to bring to life a poignant family relationship, characterized by love and protection amidst an effective portrayal of the profound impact of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on both the individual and those around them,” the jury said in a statement.

The 20-minute animation is the story of an ex-captain suffering from PTSD who lives with his daughter in a modest house by the sea. He wants to be a caring father but they have to face the challenges of a harsh life. One day, something unexpected happens. It can be either a new trouble or a blessing in disguise.

At this year’s edition of the festival, renowned Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi served as a jury member in the International Narrative Competition section, in which the Best International Narrative Feature award went to “Bikechess,” by Assel Aushakimova from Kazakhstan. 

The jury statement about the film read: “This film caught the jury unaware. With a lightness of style and use of cinematic language that led us into a society of oppressed youth and passive leadership. With stylish performances and generous cinematography, we met a country and the state of the world.”

This year’s festival jury included a diverse roster of groundbreaking filmmakers, award-winning actors, celebrated multi-hyphenate producers, and leaders from entertainment, including David O. Russell, Selma Blair, Kim Cattrall, Chinonye Chukwu, Nisha Pahuja, Nikyatu Jusu, Sheila Nevins, Francesca Scorsese, Clara McGregor, and more.

For over two decades, the Tribeca Festival has been a destination for new, groundbreaking storytelling from established and emerging artists. Tribeca will continue to explore creative innovation across film, TV, immersive, games, audio storytelling, talks, and more.
